Member Training and Consulting

Pride in Health + Wellbeing offers a variety of training options to members and non-members alike.

Drawing from ACON’s vast experience as the largest LGBTQ health service in Australia, and its 35+ years in supporting LGBTQ communities, Pride in Health + Wellbeing offers a variety of inclusion training options to meet everyone’s needs. Training can be presented in person or via online platforms such as Zoom or teams and are suitable for frontline staff, head office, executive or rainbow network members.

Pride in Health + Wellbeing members can use their included membership hours for training – standard members receive 6 hours of consulting and/or training each year as part of their membership PLUS a 2-hour HWEI debrief session. If you are looking to use more than your membership hours we have competitive rates for fee-for-service hours (with a membership discount).

Pride in Health + Wellbeing can also customise training to meet your needs, or out colleagues at ACON’s Pride Training may already have an established training program that meets your needs.

LGBTQ+ Awareness – 60 minutes

LGBTQ+ Awareness is an introductory session for anyone who is interested in learning more about the LGBTQ+ community and inclusive service delivery. This is an interactive session where questions are encouraged, and discussions are held in a respectful and safe environment.

By the end of the session participants will:

  • Understand the case for LGBTQ+ inclusion and explain why it is important in a health context
  • Understand some of the lived experiences and unique challenges for LGBTQ+ people and the impact to their accessing healthcare
  • Understand the diversity of, and differences between sex characteristics, gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation
  • Learn some introductory actions individuals can take to create a more inclusive culture

Transgender and Gender Diverse Awareness – 60 minutes

The aim of this session is to provide participants with an overall understanding of binary and non-binary gender experiences and identities as part of the LGBTQ+ spectrum. The session will explore the complex nature of gender identity and gender affirmation processes (transitioning), provide a level of comfort around terminology, outline some of the unique challenges often faced by transgender and gender diverse people and how to support a trans client accessing a service. The session will also provide awareness on the impact that culture has on the lived experiences of people regardless of their gender identity.

By the end of the session participants will:

  • Understand the diversity of, and differences between sex assigned at birth, gender identity, gender expression and sexual orientation
  • Understand some of the lived experiences and unique challenges faced by transgender and gender diverse clients and the impact to their health
  • Respond to some of the common views, stereotypes or misconceptions attached to gender diversity
  • Understand the role that individuals play in creating a more inclusive culture in supporting a trans client accessing health and wellbeing services

Empowering Allies – 60 minutes

The purpose of this session is to build on the knowledge about LGBTQ+ inclusion covered in ‘LGBTQ+ Awareness’. This session will focus on what an ally is and how we can be allies in our workplace and beyond. This interactive workshop allows participants to build their skills in intervention as well as their understanding of what makes a good ally. Participants must attend LGBTQ+ Awareness prior to attending this workshop.

By the end of the session participants will:

  • Understand what makes an effective ally
  • Respond to some of the common views that question the need for inclusion initiatives
  • Be able to intervene in non-inclusive situations

LGBTQ+ Inclusive Service Delivery – 30 minutes

The purpose of this session is to provide an overview of LGBTQ+ inclusive practices in the health and human services sector, and provide guidance on the 9 domains of the Health + Wellbeing Equality Index (HWEI).

Topics include:

  1. Organisational Readiness
  2. Marketing and Communications
  3. Intake and Assessment
  4. Confidentiality and Data Management
  5. LGBTQ+ Consultation Engagement
  6. Staff Development, Training and Resources
  7. Referrals and Stakeholder Engagement
  8. Risk Mitigation and Management
  9. Continuous Improvement

Asking Questions on Gender and Sexuality – 30 minutes

Asking Questions on Gender and Sexuality is an introductory session designed for client-facing service providers and service managers. This is an interactive session where questions are encouraged, and discussions are held in a respectful and safe environment.

By the end of the session participants will understand:

  • Why it is important to ask questions on gender and sexuality
  • What personal information is relevant to a client’s care
  • How to ask appropriate questions on gender and sexuality
  • How to respond to negative feedback or concerns
  • How to maintain confidentiality and privacy

Personal Pronouns – 30 minutes

Personal Pronouns is a short session that could be used to support a Day of Significance, the launch of a Pronouns initiative, or just to upskill employees in this specific area. This is an interactive session where questions are encouraged, and discussions are held in a respectful and safe environment.

By the end of the session participants will understand:

  • What personal pronouns are, and the different types of pronouns
  • Why organisations may focus on pronouns and other inclusive language to support trans and gender diverse people
  • How to use different pronouns to support an inclusive culture
  • How to correct yourself and others if a mistake is made

LGBTQ+ Inclusion: A Leadership Conversation – 30 minutes

This session is designed for a Senior Leadership Team / Board level discussion about LGBTQ+ inclusion, within the wider context of an organisation’s culture and service offering. Focusing on the case for inclusion and key focus areas to get started, it is ideal for organisations who want to start the process of embedding their inclusion objectives and initiatives throughout all their functional areas.

Topics include:

  • The case for inclusion
  • The components of a holistic inclusion strategy
  • Inclusive leadership behaviours

Additional training and fee-for service consultation

The Pride in Health + Wellbeing Program is completely flexible to meet your needs. If you require additional support, training or visits to multiple sites we can do this. If they aren’t covered by your membership hours we can add them on. Standard membership already comes with 6 hours of face to face consultation included, plus a HWEI debrief session.
