Intersex Inclusion in Health and Wellbeing

Standing with intersex-led organisations to champion safe, inclusive health and human services

Pride in Health + Wellbeing is committed to creating environments where intersex people feel safe, respected, and celebrated across all areas of health, wellbeing, and human services.

We are proud to work alongside intersex-led organisations, including InterAction (formerly Intersex Human Rights Australia) and Intersex Peer Support Australia (IPSA), to promote genuine inclusion through allyship, collaboration, and respect.

Following ongoing consultation with our members, stakeholders, and intersex communities, our role is to support — not lead — intersex advocacy, recognising that intersex people must be at the centre of their own inclusion work. InterAction and IPSA are the experts in lived experience, and we defer to their leadership in all intersex-specific education, guidance, and resource development.

Our approach is grounded in the principles of the Darlington Statement — a powerful, community-led declaration that outlines the rights, priorities, and needs of intersex people across Australia and Aotearoa/New Zealand.

Key Priorities of the Darlington Statement

  • Human Rights and Legal Reform
Ensuring intersex people are included and protected in law, with their voices guiding policy decisions.
  • Health and Wellbeing
Promoting informed care and putting an end to harmful medical interventions.
  • Peer Support and Community Connection
Strengthening networks that support mental health, resilience, and healing.
  • Allyship and Visibility
Respecting the diversity of intersex experiences and upholding the principle of “Nothing about us without us.”

In Health and Wellbeing Settings, the Statement Calls on Allies To:

  • Co-develop education content with intersex-led organisations
  • Ensure inclusive policies and reasonable adjustments in service delivery and employment
  • Provide access to training that deepens understanding of intersex human rights and lived experience

Our Commitment

By aligning with the Darlington Statement, Pride in Health + Wellbeing affirms our commitment to intersex inclusion through allyship, not authority. We will continue to stand beside intersex-led organisations and amplify their work to ensure the health and wellbeing sector becomes safer, more inclusive, and informed by lived experience.
